Although transporting one's vehicle is not an issue if you are moving locally, going from Raleigh to San Francisco in your car might be not the best option. Added mileage and decreased value of your car, gas expenses, not to mention how unpleasant and taxing a 2 day trip in a car can be - all those are the reasons you should hire an auto transportation company to haul your vehicle. With a little care and research, you can find reasonably priced quality movers that will handle your vehicle's transportation professionally and affordably.

The first step would be to decide on how you want your vehicle to be transported: open air trailer, enclosed trailer, and drive-away service.
The most affordable car shipping option is open air trailer. This is the most common and popular way to transport vehicles. I am sure you have seen those big 2 story trailers on the interstate. An average car or an SUV will be OK transported like this, but you might want to reconsider if you own a Porsche, and taking good care of it is far more important to you than staying on the budget.
Enclosed trailers are highly recommended for luxury and sports cars, or even an everyday vehicle, especially if you are in love with it and do not mind spending a little more money on its transportation. These trailers protect your vehicle from outside weather (sun, rain, snow), and road debris. After all, you never know what might be flying at your vehicle when the truck is cruising down the interstate at 70 miles an hour.
Drive-away-service can't really be called a car shipping service. It may be an inexpensive way to get your car from point A to point B, but it has many disadvantages as it is nothing else than having someone else driving across the country. It will still be exposed to weather and debris; your vehicle will still add a significant number of miles on it; you will still be paying for gas; and the driver, no matter how good he or she is, can still hug a tree on the way. The only good aspect of this type of service is your saved time and not having a pleasure of spending 2 days holding the steering wheel yourself.
Finding a reliable auto mover can be a challenge, and vehicle transportation industry is not famous for great customer support or client satisfaction rates. The best you can do is to ask around and get an advice from your friends, family and co-workers. If someone shipped a vehicle and experienced no problems in the past, there is a very good chance the same movers will do a job with your car as good as for your referrer. Even after getting a recommendation, spend couple of minutes and read customer reviews online. Expect several bad reviews since this is normal - there are people who are never satisfied with anything or anyone. Use your common sense, and you have to feel comfortable with the mover you choose. After all, it is your vehicle that is being shipped, and it is your responsibility to ensure it is in good hands.
