Self Storage: Save Yourself a Headache

If you have to move out before moving into your new place, self storage may be a right option for you. Save yourself a headache by following these simple packing, cleaning and organizing tips.

Before Putting the First Item into the Storage Unit

Organization is the key. It starts before even putting the first of your items into your storage. Make sure you keep detailed records of the items being stored in your unit: in case something is missing or gets damaged during storage time, you will be well prepared to defend your rights and, even more importantly, will know when something isn't right. How will you know if something's missing if you don't know what you are storing in the first place?

Take a detailed inventory of the items you are going to load into your storage
Write a number on each box with a distinct marker; write down all items in that particular box; have a separate inventory list for yourself - this will help to make sure all the boxes are there
Take pictures of all your furniture, packed boxes and items in the boxes to have a proof of the condition before storing them; good chances are, you have a smartphone with a built-in camera anyway
Keep all documentation in a safe place so you don't lose or misplace them
Keep in mind that clear plastic boxes are superior to regular cardboard boxes: first of all, they will let you see what's inside of them; second, plastic protects your items from moisture and decay way better than cardboard
After renting a storage unit, most likely you will want to clean it: bring a mop, broom, and perhaps some bleach, especially if you are planning on keeping your belongings there for a longer time
When unloading your items, use general rules of thumb: heavier, bulkier items go to the bottom; lighter things go on top of them; use moving/packing blankets if you are going to place items on something that you don't want to get damaged; shrink wrap is also a good idea. Not only it protects from moisture and decay, it also saves your furniture from scratches and other damages
Draw a little map to help you remember where each item goes, in case you need something before moving out from the storage

These tips will help you get ready for storing your items for a longer time. If you are planning on using a moving company to pack and stack everything in the storage place, that's an even better choice. But if you don't mind doing some work, this may be a good money saving option as opposed to hiring full service movers.
